LightningFAX Release Notes

Version: 8.3.0.38

Release Date: September 2007

Thank you for your interest in Sagemcom. The following document explains the evolution of LightningFAX from previous versions. It describes the new features introduced and lists those that were removed. System requirements and supported hardware are also described.

1. About LightningFAX

LightningFAX® Enterprise is an award-winning fax server software that empowers organizations with cost-effective, desktop email faxing and fax broadcasting. It enables users to send and receive faxes directly from their existing email clients or networked T.37-compliant multifunction printers.

LightningFAX’s rapid, secure, and reliable routing of faxes makes it the trusted choice of small to medium-sized businesses for improved workflow, document privacy, and fax management, yielding significant ROI.

Easy to use and administer, LightningFAX runs on Windows 2000 and 2003 and interoperates with intelligent fax boards. It increases productivity by 90% over traditional faxing, since users no longer need to make time-consuming trips to the fax machine to send or retrieve faxes, and to confirm fax transmission success.

With LightningFAX’s built-in Least Cost Routing (LCR) support, organizations can reduce telecom costs by at least 40% over traditional manual faxing.

Long-distance fax costs are virtually eliminated, since faxes sent over enterprise VPNs and WANs are routed to the system resource closest to the destination through Least Cost Routing and Intelligent Number Recognition.

With LightningFAX, fax hardware and analog fax lines are consolidated into a single system. This dramatically reduces costs compared to manual faxing, since leasing, maintenance and fax supplies are no longer needed. Organizations can save thousands of dollars a year, depending on fax volume and the number of users.

LightningFAX’s ActiveX and API toolkits enable easy customization and integration with in-house or commercial enterprise software, document workflows and invoicing systems.

LightningFAX’s SendFAX client caters to power fax users, since it is ideal for advanced functionality, such as fax broadcasting.

LightningFAX protects document privacy and facilitates compliance with various regulations, such as HIPAA and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, by routing sensitive documents in TIFF or PDF format directly to approved recipients and designated secure printers.

2. Key Features

Unified Messaging

As part of a unified messaging system, LightningFAX enables faxes to share a common inbox, along with email, data and voicemail, generating 25–40 minutes of additional productivity per employee per day.

Integrates Seamlessly

LightningFAX facilitates your business processes by easily integrating with existing applications and groupware tools, and using existing directories and phone books. It even works in perfect harmony with your network-ready Multifunction Printers (MFPs).

Saves Money and Increases ROI

LightningFAX pays for itself within 3–6 months. By fax-enabling desktop users, it saves time, money and materials associated with traditional manual faxing, Organizations with multiple locations bypass approximately 40% of their long-distance tolls by harnessing the Least Cost Routing capabilities of LightningFAX.

24/7 Reliability

Fax machines are slow, problematic and unreliable. LightningFAX makes faxing fast and stable with distributed processing, load balancing and failover support.

Unsurpassed Support

6. Upgrade Instructions

Sagemcom strongly recommends creating a backup of your system before upgrading.

The following versions are eligible and supported for an upgrade to Version 8.3.0.38:

  • LightningFAX 8.1.0.x
  • LightningFAX 8.2.0.x

Customers upgrading their Microsoft Exchange Gateway must migrate to the new SMTP Gateway integration if they are currently using (or are considering using) Microsoft Exchange 2007.

A new license must be issued in order to upgrade to the latest LightningFAX version. Please contact license.americas@sagemcom.com prior to the upgrade and our Licensing department will assist you in obtaining a new license. Customers moving to the new SMTP integration for Microsoft Exchange will be issued a new license where the Exchange Gateway will be swapped for an SMTP Gateway with the Microsoft Exchange Gateway integration option enabled.

NOTE: Upgrades are not directly supported between different products (i.e., LightningFAX -> XMediusFAX or XMediusFAX -> LightningFAX), or different languages.

User-customized template files (*.wtx, lfrasterizer.ini, etc.) will need to be manually updated following the installation. A backup copy of these files can be found under "X:\Program Files\LightningFAX\Backup\Installation\YYYYMMDD-HHhMM\".

Please contact Support if you have any issues with the upgrade.

10. Supported MFPs

LightningFAX can be integrated with a diverse range of multifunction printers (MFPs). This support allows users to scan and send their documents as faxes, much like sending faxes with a traditional fax machine.

The following requirements must be met in order to send faxes from MFPs:

  • The MFP must support the ITU T.37 specification.
  • The SMTP Gateway component must be licensed, installed and properly configured.

All LightningFAX releases have been validated with the following MFPs:

SAGEM

  • MF4690n
  • MF5481n
  • MF5680n/dn
  • MF5890dn/bdn

OKI

  • B4545 MFP
  • B2540 MFP

11. Known Issues

  • The Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program is no longer included with Windows operating systems starting with Windows Vista. However, you can download the Windows Help program from Microsoft’s Download Center in order to consult the LightningFAX online help.
  • The Gateway for Microsoft Exchange is still available for Exchange 2000 and 2003 customers but will not run on Exchange 2007. Users of Exchange 2007 will be required to move to the new SMTP-based integration and obtain a new license.
  • Broadcast Notification Settings cannot be overridden through forms (Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes), the Web client nor SMTP body codes.
  • Customers upgrading from previous releases and who are using either the PrintToWeb or PrintToMail printer drivers must reinstall those components in order to retain their functionality.
  • CDO (Collaboration Data Objects) is still supported and available through Microsoft’s Web site but is not provided as part of the Outlook 2007 installation. Microsoft Outlook forms will not be able to retrieve sender information through MAPI unless CDO is installed. For more information on this and to download Collaboration Data Objects, version 1.2.1, click here to visit the Microsoft Download Center.
